What does this rollerball pen do, and when do you need it?

The Faber-Castell Free Ink Fine is a rollerball pen that uses liquid ink for a smooth writing experience. You choose a rollerball pen when you write longer texts regularly and want a smoother writing action than a ballpoint offers. The pen writes in blue, which is the most common choice for everyday office and note-taking use.

Why this format is the right choice

With a writing width of 0.4 mm, this pen delivers a fine, crisp line. That makes it suitable for situations where legibility and precision matter, such as filling in forms, taking notes or working in diaries with limited writing space. With wider line spacing or large notepads, it works just as well, of course.

An honest look at the ink window

The Free Ink Fine has a transparent window in the barrel that lets you check the ink level. That sounds simple, but in practice it is a useful feature: you won't be caught out by an empty pen in the middle of a meeting or during a busy working day. The barrel is light grey, which keeps the window clearly visible.

Sustainability and materials

The plastic body is made up of 83% recycled plastic, which means you make a conscious material choice with this pen without compromising on functionality. The conical tip and constant ink flow ensure the pen writes consistently under normal use. After use, store the pen with the cap on to prevent the tip from drying out — standard advice for any rollerball pen with liquid ink.
